Great reference, my #1 machinist reference

February 6, 2020 By: Kian (Upton, United States)

Comments
I'm a hobbyist who recently got into machining. I've collected a few books but this is the one I'm always reaching for. I use it often to reference drill & thread sizes, but has also come in handy for a number of other things I never expected (from V-belt dimensions to ID'ing carbide inserts)

Pros
Very information dense, pages are reasonably durable

Cons
The index could be more robust; sometimes hard for me to find a topic. Would be really nice if a few pages of speeds & feeds were added for common metals/alloys.

I did find a typo in the 3rd Ed. Inch version: pg 47 for Metric Special Pitch M12x1.5 lists a tap drill size of 29/64". This is incorrect; it should be 13/32". I emailed a EBB but didn't receive a response and no updates posted for the book.

Large Print Engineer's Black Book

January 28, 2020 By: Douglas Bollinger (Mt. Holly Springs, United States)

Comments
Compared to my initial edition pocket sized Black Book, the 3rd edition Large Print is a nice upgrade. While you lose some portability, the large size is simply more pleasant to use at the work bench and contains additional information.

Pros
Several nice upgrades on common but frequently used charts: decimal equivalents, thread cutting. Now has charts for retaining rings and o-rings. Still full color with coated paper and lay-flat spiral binding.

Cons
On Page 102, the V-Belts Cross Section Dimension Chart is incorrect, ie 1" <> 1" . Looks like they enlarged the pocket sized page for the Large Print Edition and the belt cross sections are not actual size.

All information in one handy book which doesn't take up much space. This is a great publication for everyone involved in mechanical engineering.

Pros
Concise with lots of relevant information in a well indexed format

Cons
For old blokes like myself some of the print is a bit small but I'm happy to put up with that considering the small format of the book.

Great for in the shop

December 28, 2019 By: Brad Rarick (Newfoundland, United States)

A must have for the machinist. All the practical data you will need on a daily basis. Leave the bible at the desk for that once in year information.

Pros
Just the common data. Portable size with strong pages that don't rip. Love the coloring of the charts, makes it so easy to find data

Cons
I find the table of contents to be useless, just unneeded pages. The index is so much quicker to find what you need.

This is a wonderful reference book. It's consolidated and easier to access the Machinery's Handbook. I would recommend this to everyone that has an interest in machining.

Pros
Easy to Use, Easy to Access, Pocket Size, Great Graphics, Wonderful page coating (keeps dirt and oil off)

Cons
None. I wish more books could be this efficient. No fluff, just information.
