3rd Edition (Metric) Excellent! But one thing...

May 16, 2019 By: Dirk Brewer (Tempe, United States)

Comments
Excellent book. A very nice compliment the classic tomb of the Machinery's Handbook.

Even though I'm in the USA, I chose the Metric edition because so much that I do now is fixing, modifying, adapting things that are made are now metric dimensions. But the book as just enough Imperial information to get by.

The ONE improvement I can think of, is that it is provided with sticky tabs to quickly go to specific sections, but I wish they would mark what page and where on the page to put the tabs so things line up cleanly.

Pros
Small, concise, easy to find information.

Cons
It's small. Getting older, need reading glasses. Hoping they make a large print of the Metric version.

Small and handy

This book is small but super handy.

Pros
Tons of useful information in a manufacturing environment.
High quality book. Well laid out.

Cons
Small. May need your glasses. Thread milling information would be useful.

Returned Machinery's 30th Ed. Handbook - This is MUCH more useful

May 13, 2019 By: Marc McKenzie (Windsor, United States)

Comments
While I've been working with metal and tools as an avocation for a couple years, I'm now setting up my dream mini-machine shop - something I've wanted to do since I was a boy (I'm medically disabled near age 60). I purchased both this book, and the eponymous "Machinery's Handbook" in large print. Now that I can actually read the pages, I realized in truth I would rarely end up taking the time to forage in it for useful information either planning or executing a project. In contrast, the "Engineers Black Book" is highly usable, readable, searchable, and has all the information I've been looking for (and a lot more as I learn). So I sent back the machinist's bible, and kept this. I've already used it three times in the first day!

Pros
Construction, size, grease-proof pages
Readable and with tabs
All the practical information I've been looking for

Cons
Sticking the tabs on took way too long - I would vote AND pay for real indexing cut into the pages - would slip a bit easier into the pocket

It would’ve been nice if the 3rd edition would’ve still came with the drill gage.

Feeling ripped off

April 30, 2019 By: Sam (Aberdare, Australia)

Comments
I feel quite disappointed about the third edition as there are a few things that were changed that shouldn't of been. Overall it's a very informative book. I found that most of the drill sizes in some of the thread dimensions had changed especially under the drill size of the UNF threads section which had one dimension changed up to .75mm. I referenced the 1st edition and found it and the 2nd were identical in terms of dimensions so I'm a little confused as to why these dimensions were changed. One other major dissatisfaction was the lack of drill point sharpening guage. I mean, I knew I wasn't getting one from the start but if the book had a ton more information that the second edition then I'd be happy but realistically after a quick comparison there's not much more in the third edition. Oh and I forgot to mention that your paying more for the latest edition. The tabs are good in theory but in practice they're kinda annoying. Granted, I attached all the tabs provided which doesn't leave me much room to be able to flick through the pages smoothly. My advice would be if you do want to use them, only attach the ones that you use every day but if your flicking through to the same place every day then you should have a general feel to where what your after is. As I work with CNC's, I was disappointed to see the basic G & M codes removed, I know if I was a compentent operator then I should know them all but sometimes you need a memory jog. It's nice to see more detail on adhesives and plastics and definitely good to see info on bearings, o-rings, c-clips and flanges. All in all if I had of been able to have a good flick through both 3rd and 2nd I would of chosen 2nd over 3rd. In saying all of that it is a bloody handy little book to have as I'm constantly having to refer to it for critical dimensions and general info.
(If it were possible, I'd love to be able to swap it for a 2nd edition with the guage. I know I probably wouldn't be able to seeing as I've already used it but yeah if I could then that would be rad)

Pros
Slightly more detailed info on some things in 3rd edition than 2nd
Additional info
Made with quality materials
Ring bound
Easily cleanable

Cons
NO DRILL POINT SHARPENING GUAGE FOR THE PRICE
Not much more info than the previous edition
G & M codes removed
Don't see the reason why the fella on the front now has to have clothes
